Our approach
How We Teach
After more than 20 years running summer schools, we have learnt one thing above all else: children do not rise to low expectations. Our teaching is structured, high-quality, and deeply human.
"We don't just fill the summer — we use it. Every morning has a purpose, every session builds on the last, and every child leaves knowing exactly how far they've come."
— Reena Damani, Founder & Head Teacher
1
Teacher-led, always
Every session is delivered by a qualified, experienced classroom teacher — not a university student or generic tutor. Our teachers know how children learn, not just what to teach.
2
Small groups, big attention
Maximum 8 children per group allows us to teach at pace while giving every child the individual attention they need to progress. No one gets lost.
3
Structured, not rigid
4
Assessment every day
5
Environment as teacher
A structured classroom environment, away from home and away from screens, sets the tone from day one.

Every morning
A typical day at summer school
Three purposeful hours — structured, high-energy, and packed with learning. Every minute is planned. Every break is earned.
Children settle, register, and complete a short starter activity — a vocabulary challenge, logic puzzle, or mental maths warm-up. Sets the tone immediately.
Comprehension, writing, or verbal reasoning depending on the week's focus. Direct teaching, guided practice, independent work. 45 focused minutes.
Healthy snack. Outdoor time on the NLCS grounds. 10 minutes — enough to reset, short enough to keep momentum.
Number work, problem-solving, or non-verbal reasoning depending on year group and week. Timed drills are embedded for Year 5. 60 focused minutes.
10 minutes to reset. Fresh air, water, re-focus.
Applied project work, writing extension, mock practice (Y5), or cross-subject challenge. Ends with a 5-minute reflection — what did I learn today?
Supervised dismissal. Teachers record daily formative assessment scores. Notes added to each child's progress tracker for the weekly report.

What parents say
The results speak for themselves
Over 20 years of summer schools. Hundreds of families. Here is what they told us.
"My daughter came back from the first week visibly different. More confident, more focused, and actually excited to talk about what she'd learned. The weekly reports were brilliant: specific, honest, and written by someone who clearly knew her. Two weeks well spent."

Parent of Y5 daughter · Summer 2025
"My son is in Year 3 and wasn't confident in maths at all. Two weeks later, he's asking me to give him extra problems. The teachers clearly know how to build children up without putting pressure on them."

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as your online summer courses?
No — they're two different programmes. Summer School runs in person at NLCS Edgware and is open to children from Reception to Year 6 across all abilities. Our online summer courses run separately on Zoom and are designed specifically for 11+ preparation in Year 4 and Year 5. Some families do both.
How many children are in each group?
Groups are kept deliberately small and organised by year group, so every child is taught at the right level and gets the attention they deserve. This is one of the things parents tell us makes the biggest difference. We aim for a 1:6 teacher : pupil ratio.
Can we book just one week?
Yes. Most families book the full two weeks because the learning builds beautifully across both, but Week 1 is available to book on its own. Week 2 is available by request, subject to availability, please get in touch and we'll let you know.
What makes this different from other summer schools?
Three things. Every session is led by an experienced, qualified teacher — not a holiday camp leader. The focus is on real academic progress, not just keeping children busy. And we do all of this in a warm, encouraging environment where children genuinely enjoy learning. By the end of two weeks, parents tell us their child is more confident, more focused, and ready for the year ahead.
How do I know my child will enjoy it?
Because we've built it that way. Children learn best when they feel safe, challenged at the right level, and noticed by their teacher. Our mornings are paced thoughtfully, with breaks, variety, and plenty of moments for children to feel proud of what they've done. If your child has any worries before they start, please tell us — we'll make sure they're settled from day one.
My child is not preparing for 11+. Is summer school still right for them?
Absolutely. Summer School is for every child from Reception to Year 6 — whether you're building early reading and number skills, strengthening core literacy and maths, or working towards specific entrance exams. We group children by year and tailor the work to their stage. The 11+ focus is one strand within the wider programme; it isn't the whole offer.
What is the weekly progress report?
At the end of each week, you'll receive a written summary from your child's teacher covering what they've worked on, the progress they've made, and where to focus next. It's honest, specific, and written by the person who has actually been teaching them — not a tick-box template. Many parents tell us it's the most useful feedback they've ever had on their child's learning.
Are your teachers qualified?
Yes — every teacher brings years of classroom experience, with a particular specialism in selective school preparation. We don't use student tutors or unqualified instructors. Your child will be taught by experienced teachers, every session.
What happens if my child misses a day?
Please let us know as early as you can. We'll send through what was covered so your child doesn't fall behind, and their teacher will help them catch up the following morning. We know life happens — illness, family commitments — and we handle missed days with care.
What Shall my Child Bring?
A water bottle, a healthy snack, a pencil case (pencils, eraser, sharpener, ruler), and a notebook. All course materials, worksheets, and learning resources are provided. Please dress your child in comfortable clothing — there's no uniform requirement.
